Introduction
The twentieth century marked an explosion of interest in gender issues due to the increased understanding of the important role women play in the development of any society. The United Nations decade for women from 1975-1985 contributed a great deal to arousing global efforts to emancipate women from patriarchal practices of male dominance, bias and discrimination. These efforts are on-going and have been particularly geared towards attaining the UN millennium development goal of gender equality and women empowerment in 2015.

Abstract
This paper focused on the marketisation of education and its challenges to school leadership in Nigeria. The paper traces the origin of school marketisation to the developed economies, noting that it came as a response to globalization and the need to increase standards in education. Privatisation of education and school autonomy were highlighted as elements of marketisation of schools in Nigeria. However the paper distinguished between autonomous schools and self-managing schools, noting that Nigerian schools fall under selfmanaging schools. Quality, which is the main focus of marketisation was also discussed.
